How To Uninstall Bloatware On Android Using ADB Easily!

Almost everyone has a smartphone these days, and at some point, you must have wondered about the apps that come pre-installed in your phone known as Bloatware.

Those apps you never use! Some of these apps can be uninstalled without any hassle, but others can’t be as they are System apps.
Some system apps are critical for your phone to function correctly.

But,

There are many apps on your device, just using your phone’s resources like RAM, Memory, and CPU.
That’s why they are called Bloatware.

Rooting is not the solution for almost everyone except geeky like you!

So we will remove bloatware from the android phone using ADB(Android Debug Bridge) command line.

It may sound intimidating to you, but trust me, you’d be able to perform the uninstallation of all these bloatware apps with ease using the steps provided below.

The best part is that you will still be getting OTA updates on your Phone after all of this, and there is no violation of warranty.

Before proceeding further make sure you have these things with you:-

  • Your Android Smartphone (from which you want to remove the bloatware).
  • A working Windows PC.
  • A USB cable (Type C or Micro according to your phone and PC)

Note: Sometimes, phones of different brands have different ways to find a particular option in settings. In this case, I am using a Xiaomi Smartphone, and depending on your phone brand, these settings may be found elsewhere.

How To Remove Bloatware from Android Device

Step 1:- On your Smartphone, go to Settings and tap on About Phone. Find MIUI Version and keep tapping on it till you see a pop up saying, “You are now a Developer.”

Turn On Developer Option

Step 2:- Go to Settings>>Additional Settings>> Developer Options

Developer Options

Now find USB Debugging, tap on it to grant permission.

Step 3:- Open Play Store then search for “App Inspector” and Install it.

Install app inspector

Step 4:- Now start your PC and download this zip file. Or you can go to this page and click on the Windows link present at the bottom.

Step 5:- Right-click on the downloaded file and click on “extract to platform-tools_r30.0.3-windows”. This will extract the content of the files to a folder named “platform-tools_r30.0.3-windows”.

Note: If you can’t see the extract option then Download and Install WinRAR from here (Just run the executable file after downloading it and keep clicking on next or accept to install it).

Step 6:- After extracting open the “platform-tools_r30.0.3-windows” folder and then “platform-tools” folder. Hold the shift button on the keyboard and right-click at any blank space inside the folder and then click on the “Open PowerShell window here”( a PowerShell Terminal will open).

Step 7:- Connect your phone to the PC via USB (Make sure you can see “USB debugging connected” in the notification panel.

Step 8:- Now press enter after typing the following command in PowerShell ./adb devices

Note :- copy and paste this and all the commands which are given.

You will get a pop on your phone asking for permission to allow USB Debugging, tap on OK.

Step 9:- Again type ./adb devices and press enter in the terminal. This time you will get the serial number of your device if you’ve done everything correctly.

Step 10:- Write ./adb shell in the terminal and press enter.

Step 11:- On your phone open the “App Inspector” app and look for the app you want to uninstall (I am going with “Mi Music”) and tap on it. You will see it’s a package name, note it down somewhere.

Step 12:- Write down this command pm uninstall -k --user 0 <name of package> and replace <name of package> with the package name of the app that you want to uninstall (in my case it is pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.player since I am uninstalling “Mi Music” app. You just type the package name of the app which you noted down in step 11.) and press enter.

If you get “Success” as the output then congratulations as you have successfully uninstalled that app. Similarly, by just repeating “Step 11” and “Step 12” again you can now uninstall more apps if you wish to.

Before and After pressing enter.

Note: Know that there are some apps that are critical for the system to work so make sure you know what you are uninstalling or you may end up with a bricked phone.
